Two destinations for the price of one: A Stopover in Katowice , Poland

Stopovers are a great way for budget travellers to explore more for less by combining trips. In this post I will briefly explain the difference between a Layover and a Stopover and how you can use it to save money from the airfare and use the difference to stay in an additional destination.

A Layover is basically when your flight makes stops and you arrive to a destination where you catch a connection flight in order to reach your final destination.

While connection flights can be a lot cheaper than direct flights and give you a little break to stretch your legs, the down side is that you may have arrived in an interesting destination but you are stuck in the airport waiting to catch the next flight. That’s where Stopovers make the difference.

A Stopover gives you the opportunity to make a stop and visit the destination you have arrived at and then continue your journey. Some airlines even offer free stopovers to selected locations!

How is a Stopover cheaper? Many countries have unique budget airlines so if the country you are flying off doesn’t offer one to your selected destination, you may be better off searching for alternative airports or a mid-way destination.

You can plan your own stopover journey manually ,use a stopover search engine like Airwander or take advantage of the Airlines that offer free stopovers.

Airwander lets you enter your origin, destination and the number of days you want to stop over, then it gives you a list of destinations and an estimate on how much you are saving or spending for each possible stopover. However , keep in mind that Skyscanner and Airwander don’t offer the same deals so i would advice you in checking both to find the best deal for you.

Alternatively , you can check whether there are any airlines flying to the destination you are interested in that offer free Stopovers. Here is a list provided by HuffingtonPost on Airlines with Free Stopovers.

In the section below we will demonstrate how to plan your own Stopover manually using SkyScanner and hack one trip into two!

Stopover in Katowice, Poland

I was flying from Cyprus to Leeds for my graduation in July. The ticket from Larnaca Airport(LCA) to Leeds Bradford Airport(LBA) was relatively cheap , however the return ticket was at 300€ per person, which is quite a lot.

Cyprus attracts many British tourists in the summer time so the prices on certain dates can be more expensive than usual. If you are flexible with your dates you can still score great deals but if you are not it can be frustrating.

One way to work around the issue is to find alternative airports that may offer budget airlines and calculate how much it would cost you to get there.

If you are unable to find alternative dates or airports then you might want to explore the Stopover option.

The following example aims to show you how a Stopover alternative can sometimes be beneficial and how you may apply it to see if it works out for you. Please note that the following example is for reference purposes and the prices may vary at the time of your trip.

These prices are as they were on Skyscanner.com on 19/03/2018.

I don’t have any screenshots of the prices for the 25/06/2017 therefore for the demonstration I will use the current prices on Skyscanner.com  for 25/06/2018. As mentioned the ticket from Leeds(LBA) to Larnaca(LCA) was priced at  300€ per person.

We have searched for alternative airports but unfortunately for our dates the prices didn’t seem to go down much, even the flights with a stop would still be 260€ per person. We then decided to explore the stopover option ,fly midway- have a break and then fly to Cyprus from there.

Poland was the first country to come in mind since it is a very affordable destination and offers budget airlines from UK and to Cyprus. After researching the flights, calculating the additional costs of transport and stay, the total of the Stopover in Katowice was actually within the price we had to pay to fly from Leeds back to Cyprus! So Katowice it is!!

 Budget Plan

We ended up with the plan to fly from Doncaster Sheffiled Airport(DSA) to Katowice Airport (KTW) on the 25th, spend two nights in Katowice and on the 27th fly from Katowice Airport (KTW) to Larnaca Airport(LCA).

In order to get from Leeds to Doncaster we took the Virgin train service from Leeds Station to Doncaster Station which cost us 9€ each and from there we took the X4 Shuttle Bus to the Airport which costs us about 3.50€ each. Total for both: 25

The flight from Doncaster Sheffiled Airport(DSA) is priced at 117€ per person which would come to the total of 234€.

Transportation:

We used a Taxi service to go from Katowice Airport to our Hotel(City centre) since we arrived late and it cost us about 40. From the Centre back to the airport we arrived by bus which cost us less than 5 for both tickets.

Accommodation:

We stayed for two nights in Novotel Hotel near the city centre, the total price after a discount we had was 60 for two people. However you can certainly find accommodation for a lot less , for example Ibis Budget hotel costs only about 20€!

Food:

Restaurants in Katowice are quite affordable , an average meal in a nice restaurant costs around 6-7 each!

The Flight from Katowice Airport (KTW) to Larnaca Airport(LCA) is priced at 83€ per person so thats 166 total.

Result:

Flight from Leeds to Larnaca : 600€

Stopover in Katowice: 530€

Leeds to DSA: 25
Flight DSA-KTW: 234
Flight KTW-LCA: 166
Taxi:40
Bus:5
Hotel:60

Taadaaa! We made it! A Short Stopover that paid for its self with the money we saved from the direct airfare. Oh and 70 to spend on delicious polish food and shopping!!
